To start our hike into the Picos we drove up to the high mountain lakes of Enol and Ercina. The trail went along the left side of the lake and then cut into the hills towards the Cares gorge (this side of the high peaks you see in the distance here.)
Though we were never at lost for company on the hike (sheep, goats, and cows are everywhere --even at 8000 feet), this shot was taken by my little automatic camera. Behind us was the cloud bank we were to encounter later on the trip back down.
Left: Dan stands at the edge -- below is the Cares Gorge and beyond are the peaks of the western Picos. Right: as we retraced our steps back down the mountains, we stopped here, amazed at the sound of hundreds of sheep all wearing bells of a slightly different pitch.
--One of the few sheep that would actually stop grazing long enough to look at us.
